Auditor General Ahmed Issa Gutale met officials from Mogadishu Al-Port Corp., operated by Turkey-based Albayrak, to discuss measures aimed at improving transparency, financial oversight and compliance with obligations outlined in the port management agreement.

The discussions focused on strengthening accountability mechanisms and ensuring that audited financial statements are submitted on time to facilitate effective monitoring and verification of government revenues generated through the port. Gutale emphasized the importance of regular and timely financial disclosures, describing them as essential for enhancing oversight and ensuring public revenues are accurately tracked.

Mogadishu Port is Somalia’s principal maritime gateway and a critical source of government income, handling the bulk of the country’s imports and exports. Revenue collection and transparency at the facility have increasingly come under scrutiny as the federal government seeks to improve domestic revenue mobilization and strengthen public financial management.

Government officials said the meeting forms part of broader efforts by state institutions to enhance transparency and accountability across strategic sectors of the economy, in line with ongoing fiscal reform programs supported by international partners. The Office of the Auditor General said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to promote sound financial management, strengthen oversight mechanisms and improve accountability in the management of public resources.

The issue is likely to carry broader political weight as Somalia navigates federal power-sharing, regional competition and the search for stronger public institutions.
