The argument that the United States can save money by stepping back from NATO is politically simple and economically incomplete. The alliance is not only a defence commitment; it is infrastructure, market access and influence that would be expensive to reconstruct alone.
American pressure on European governments to spend more is likely to continue, and many allies have increased their budgets. But burden-sharing is different from withdrawal. Leaving or sharply reducing US commitments would force Washington to replace bases, logistics, intelligence networks and interoperability built over decades.
The economic effects would extend beyond the Pentagon. Research cited in the debate suggests NATO membership strengthens trade among allies, while a US exit could reduce exports substantially. Separate modelling of a major reduction in American security commitments points to broader losses in gross domestic product.
Those estimates are uncertain, but the direction of risk is clear. Security relationships support commercial confidence, investment and standard-setting. A weaker American role would create space for Russia and China to expand their diplomatic and economic leverage.
Europe would respond by spending more, but rearmament takes time. Ammunition plants, air defences, intelligence systems and command structures cannot be replaced through budget announcements alone. During that transition, deterrence would weaken.
Washington would also lose political leverage over how European military power develops. An alliance that appears costly can still be cheaper than a continent forced to build parallel systems without US leadership.
The case for NATO should not rest on nostalgia or permanent European dependence. Allies should carry more of the burden, and the United States should demand measurable capability.
But the balance sheet of departure is not a refund. It is a transfer from predictable alliance costs to larger, less controllable expenses in trade, force posture and crisis management. Strategic autonomy for Washington would prove surprisingly expensive.
