The celebrations, being held at Al Houriya Square, have brought together heads of state, senior government officials, and international dignitaries.
The event features cultural performances, entertainment, and displays highlighting the unity, patriotism, and national identity of the Djiboutian people. President Hassan Sheikh is expected to deliver a speech congratulating the government and people of Djibouti on their Independence Day.
He is also expected to reaffirm the historic ties and close cooperation between Somalia and Djibouti. Somalia and Djibouti share deep historical, cultural, and familial bonds, as well as common strategic interests.
Somalia also played an important role in supporting Djibouti’s struggle for independence during the colonial era, when the territory was known as the French Somali Coast (French Somaliland).
The issue is likely to carry broader political weight as Somalia navigates federal power-sharing, regional competition and the search for stronger public institutions.
