Qoorqoor Withdraws From Re-Election Race in Galmudug State |DHUSAMAREB: President of Galmudug, Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor), has officially announced that he will not seek another term in office, saying he will support whoever is elected to lead the regional state.
Speaking about his decision, Qoorqoor said he was stepping aside in the interest of Galmudug’s stability and the public good. He pledged to cooperate with the incoming administration to ensure continuity in governance, development, and state-building efforts.
The Federal Government of Somalia is widely seen as backing businessman Libaan Ahmed, who is expected to emerge as the leading contender in the upcoming Galmudug presidential election, although the electoral process and timetable have not yet been officially announced. Qoorqoor’s withdrawal is expected to end the political uncertainty that had recently strained relations between the Galmudug administration and the Federal Government, affecting preparations for the regional election.
The Federal Government is expected to oversee the election of Galmudug’s new leadership in the coming days. Galmudug will become the second Federal Member State to undergo a leadership transition after South West State, where the federal government’s preferred candidate recently secured victory.
The issue is likely to carry broader political weight as Somalia navigates federal power-sharing, regional competition and the search for stronger public institutions.
