Britain’s push for longer-range weapons matters because the armed forces are trying to compensate for shrinking mass with the ability to strike farther and harder. The strategy is logical; the budget behind it remains unsettled.
The troubled deployment of HMS Dragon reinforced concerns about the Royal Navy’s readiness and shortages of crews, munitions and spare parts. Similar pressures affect the army and air force after decades of reduced investment and the transfer of equipment to Ukraine.
Military leaders increasingly argue that Britain must be able to detect and attack targets at greater distance, both to deter Russia and to avoid a prolonged war of attrition. That approach suits a force of roughly 70,000 regular soldiers with limited prospects for rapid expansion.
Projects are beginning to reflect the shift. Britain is investing in the Franco-Italian STRATUS missile programme, purchasing US Precision Strike Missiles for the army and exploring deep-strike cooperation with Germany. Ground-launched cruise missiles and one-way attack drones are also part of the emerging mix.
The problem is time. Some European hypersonic and cruise-missile programmes will not enter service until the late 2030s. American production is under pressure from its own operational demands, and British procurement decisions have been slowed by disputes between the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence.
The government’s commitment to raise defence spending helps, but it does not automatically close a reported multibillion-pound funding gap. Without confirmed orders, industry will not build factories or supply chains at the required speed.
Long-range strike can give Britain disproportionate military effect and strengthen NATO deterrence. It cannot substitute for maintenance, stockpiles, trained personnel and resilient logistics.
London’s strategic review has identified the right direction. The decisive issue is whether ministers fund weapons soon enough to matter, rather than announcing capabilities that arrive after the most dangerous period has passed.
