The next shock to Southeast Asia\u2019s financial system may not begin with a bank failure. It may begin with a convincing video, a forged central-bank message or thousands of synthetic transactions released at machine speed.<\/p>\n
That risk matters now because generative artificial intelligence is lowering the cost of attacking trust\u2014the basic asset on which banking, payments and public markets depend. A fabricated statement attributed to a regulator can move deposits before officials have time to deny it. Deepfake executives can authorise transfers, while synthetic identities can pass automated checks across multiple jurisdictions.<\/p>\n
ASEAN states have invested heavily in national cybersecurity and digital finance. The region also has established forums for coordination. But the architecture remains fragmented, with different legal standards, reporting rules and technical capacities across ten member countries.<\/p>\n
Financial contagion does not respect those divisions. Payment networks, mobile wallets and cross-border banking links can transmit panic rapidly from one market to another. A false claim targeting a large institution in Singapore, Indonesia or Thailand could be amplified across regional social-media ecosystems within minutes.<\/p>\n
The challenge is economic as much as technical. Repeated fraud raises compliance costs, slows digital adoption and may push consumers back toward cash. Smaller banks and fintech companies are especially vulnerable because they often lack the resources to authenticate content and monitor coordinated attacks.<\/p>\n
ASEAN needs a shared protocol for verifying official communications, reporting AI-enabled incidents and coordinating with banks, platforms and telecom companies. Regional stress tests should include synthetic-media attacks, not only conventional cyber intrusions.<\/p>\n
The region could become the Global South\u2019s first major test case because its digital economy is expanding faster than its collective safeguards.
