Russian authorities accuse Remeslo of spreading false information about the armed forces, an offence created after the invasion of Ukraine and punishable by a lengthy prison sentence. The law has become one of the state\u2019s principal tools for policing public discussion of the war.<\/p>\n
Remeslo is an unusual defendant. For years he was known as a pro-Kremlin commentator and a vocal opponent of Alexei Navalny. His political reversal in 2026 therefore carried more symbolic weight than criticism from a conventional opposition figure.<\/p>\n
In a manifesto explaining why he had stopped supporting Vladimir Putin, Remeslo attacked the war, the erosion of free expression and the concentration of power around the presidency. He called for Putin\u2019s resignation and eventual prosecution.<\/p>\n
Soon afterward, Remeslo spent about a month in a psychiatric hospital under circumstances that remain unclear. His subsequent arrest has revived questions about whether medical institutions are being used coercively, although no public evidence has established the basis of his admission.<\/p>\n
The case illustrates the expanding reach of Russia\u2019s security state. Wartime legislation no longer merely suppresses activists with established opposition networks. It can also be used against insiders, propagandists and legal professionals who defect from the approved narrative.<\/p>\n
That has strategic value for the Kremlin. Punishing a former loyalist deters others inside the system who may be reconsidering their position as the war\u2019s costs accumulate.<\/p>\n
