Authorities have recorded more than 2,100 confirmed cases and over 800 deaths across five provinces. Ituri accounts for the overwhelming majority of infections, but a case in the border zone of Mahagi has raised concern about further transmission into Uganda.<\/p>\n
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the epidemic had grown faster over the past month than any previous Ebola outbreak. More than four in five newly detected cases are not linked to existing contact lists, a sign that large chains of transmission remain invisible to health teams.<\/p>\n
The pattern of deaths is equally troubling. Many patients are dying in their communities before reaching treatment centres, reducing the chances of early care and increasing exposure among relatives and neighbours.<\/p>\n
The response has expanded sharply. Treatment capacity now exceeds 800 beds, laboratories have grown from one to 16, and clinical trials are testing new antibody and antiviral combinations. Vaccine and post-exposure studies are also under way.<\/p>\n
But capacity is being consumed almost as quickly as it is added. Bed occupancy is high, several facilities are overcrowded, and insecurity has disrupted operations in the east. Population movement, mining activity and cross-border trade further complicate tracing.<\/p>\n
Uganda\u2019s linked outbreak is nearing the 42-day countdown required for an official end, but that progress remains vulnerable while transmission continues across the border.<\/p>\n
The WHO and Africa CDC plan still faces a funding shortfall of more than $400 million. The immediate calculation for donors is straightforward: paying to contain the outbreak now will be cheaper than financing a larger regional emergency later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
