It is about control.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese companies, led by shipping giant COSCO, have stakes in more than 20 European ports, with Greece\u2019s Piraeus standing as the most prominent example of deep Chinese involvement. Those investments brought money, cargo and modernization. They also placed critical infrastructure inside a wider strategic rivalry between Beijing, Brussels and NATO.<\/p>\n<p>For years, many European governments treated port deals as commercial transactions. That view is fading. Ports hold logistics data, connect military and civilian supply chains and can shape where trade flows across the continent. In a crisis, access and operational dependence become security questions.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is responding with tighter foreign-investment screening and a broader effort to reduce strategic dependencies. Concerns include potential intelligence access, leverage over host governments and the proximity of Chinese-operated facilities to NATO logistics.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing rejects that framing. Chinese officials argue that port investment supports jobs, lowers transport costs and strengthens supply chains. They warn that discriminatory restrictions would invite countermeasures and accuse Europe of drifting toward protectionism.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides have a point \u2014 and that is precisely why the issue is difficult. Europe benefits from Chinese trade and capital, yet it cannot ignore the strategic value of infrastructure that moves energy, goods and military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>A total retreat from Chinese investment would be costly and unrealistic. Unrestricted access is equally hard to defend.
