The execution of a man in central Somalia less than 48 hours after a police commander was killed matters because it places the speed of the country’s justice system under renewed scrutiny.
Authorities in Jarriiban district said Ibrahim Ahmed Kooshin was convicted of murdering police commander Guuleed Abdikadir Ali, known as Kadleeye. Kooshin was arrested soon after the shooting and executed by firing squad in a public square on Friday.
Officials said the sentence was imposed under qisas, the principle of retributive justice used in murder cases. The commander had been buried a day earlier.
The compressed timeline has drawn attention beyond Mudug. Supporters of swift punishment may see the case as a demonstration that attacks on security officials will carry immediate consequences. Critics will focus on whether a defendant facing the death penalty had sufficient time to obtain counsel, challenge evidence and pursue an appeal.
Those questions carry particular weight in Somalia, where formal courts, customary law and Islamic legal principles often operate alongside one another, and where judicial capacity varies sharply between regions.
The case also reflects the broader pressure on local authorities to show control in areas where police and government officials face persistent security threats. But deterrence depends on more than speed. It also depends on confidence that the process was lawful, transparent and insulated from public anger.
Human-rights organisations have repeatedly urged Somalia to strengthen safeguards in capital cases and move away from executions. The Jarriiban case is therefore likely to remain controversial even after the sentence has been carried out. The state has demonstrated its power to punish quickly; it must still demonstrate that justice was fully served.
