The development marks a notable turn in Somalia’s political and security landscape, with the discussions came during a meeting on Thursday between the Acting Head of UNSOS, Ms.

Qurat-ul-Ain Sadozai, and the UK Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, where the two sides reviewed cooperation under the Somali Security Forces (SSF) Trust Fund and ongoing support to security operations in the country. According to UNSOS, the talks focused on the office’s logistical and operational assistance to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Somali Security Forces, both of which remain central to efforts to counter Al-Shabaab and enhance security across Somalia.

The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining predictable financial and operational support to sustain ongoing security operations while building the long-term capacity of Somalia’s security institutions. Sadozai expressed appreciation for the United Kingdom’s continued contributions through the SSF Trust Fund, describing the mechanism as a key component in strengthening Somalia’s security sector.

The SSF Trust Fund supports the development and operational readiness of Somali security forces through funding for critical capabilities, training, equipment, and institutional capacity-building initiatives. UNSOS plays a central role in providing logistical support to both AUSSOM and Somali security forces, including transportation, medical support, engineering services, and other operational requirements necessary for security operations.

The meeting comes at a time when Somalia and its international partners are seeking to consolidate security gains against Al-Shabaab while advancing the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to Somali forces. The United Kingdom remains one of Somalia’s key international security partners and has been a longstanding contributor to efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s security institutions and supporting stabilization initiatives.

The episode underscores the continuing pressure on Somali institutions as the federal government and regional authorities seek to balance security operations with political stability and public confidence.
